Hybrid polar compounds (HPCs) represent another kind of cyto-differentiating agent. Hexamethylene bisacetamide (HMBA), the prototype HPC, is an inducer of terminal differentiation and/or apoptosis in cultured transformed cells, including murine erythroleukemia (MEL) cells, human bladder carcinoma cells, and human myeloma cells.
