Selon certains puristes, «amorti» est l'action d'envoyer une balle très courte, rebondissant peu, tandis que «amortie» est la balle résultant d'un «amorti». Cette distinction n'est pas toujours respectée. Néanmoins ces deux termes sont génériques. En anglais, si l'on fait allusion à une volée avec cet effet, on n'utilise pas le terme «drop shot», mais plutôt «drop volley».
