A lightly hit, spinning return that drops softly over the net, forcing the opponent to approach the net.

If successful, a drop shot will bounce twice before the opponent can get to it.

You never want to attempt to hit a drop shot when you are well behind the baseline. This means the ball has a longer distance to travel before it crosses the net, allowing your opponent more time to react and get to the ball.

Revers, volée ou coup droit dont le geste est amorti au moment de l'impact avec la balle, destiné à «déposer» la balle à proximité immédiate du filet.

CONT

L'amortie présente une trajectoire légèrement arquée qui passe près du filet et qui effectue un deuxième bond avant la ligne de service. L'intention est de surprendre l'adversaire ou de l'obliger à courir rapidement vers l'avant. On l'exécute soit à 3/4 de terrain, à mi-terrain ou au filet.

OBS

La variante «amortie» est l'appellation la plus souvent utilisée. Selon certains puristes, «amorti» est l'action d'envoyer une balle très courte, rebondissant peu, tandis que «amortie» est la balle résultant d'un «amorti». Cette distinction n'est pas toujours respectée. Néanmoins ces deux termes sont génériques. En anglais, si l'on fait allusion à une volée avec cet effet, on n'utilise pas le terme «drop shot», mais plutôt «drop volley». On peut dire aussi que le terme «amortie» est la forme elliptique du terme «balle amortie».
