L'utilisation des tamis n'est plus possible au-dessous de 40 à 50 [microns]. On sépare les pélites des fractions plus grossières par tamisage, et l'on effectue la granulométrie des pélites avec d'autres méthodes : on déduit leur dimension de leur vitesse de chute dans un milieu fluide moins dense qu'elles.
