Certains auteurs établissent une distinction entre les animaux carnivores et les animaux carnassiers, définissant les premiers comme des animaux qui se nourrissent plus ou moins régulièrement de chair, et les seconds comme des animaux qui se nourrissent de chair crue, de viande crue, de proies animales vivantes. Dans le langage courant ces deux termes sont considérés comme des synonymes. Il est à noter qu'au figuré «carnivore» s'emploie familièrement pour désigner une personne qui aime beaucoup la viande (saignante), alors que «carnassier» s'emploie de manière péjorative pour désigner une personne cruelle et avide. 3, record 1, French, - carnivore
