The year 1979 was proclaimed the International Year of the Child by the United Nations. The proclamation was signed on January 1, 1979 by United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim. En 1959, l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a adopté la Déclaration sur les droits de l'enfant.
