In statistics, the shape of a frequency distribution curve, specifically the degree of flatness or peakedness. The normal distribution is mesokurtic; the curve with a higher degree of kurtosis (peakedness) is leptokurtic; and the curve with the flat top (compared to the normal curve) is platykurtic.

On peut comparer la courbe de fréquence à une courbe de fréquence idéale [la courbe normale] et faire apparaître ainsi l'aplatissement ou l'allongement au voisinage du mode. On emploie le mot aplatissement pour décrire la courbure anormale (ou gibbosité) d'une courbe de fréquence par rapport à la courbe idéale. Quand la courbe est plus aplatie que la courbe normale, on dit qu'elle est platicurtique; quand elle est plus aiguë, on dit qu'elle est leptocurtique; une courbe normale est dite mésocurtique (en grec, «kurtosis» signifie bosse, «platus» large, «leptos» grêle et «mesos» au milieu de).
