The Assembly of First Nations exists to fulfill the goal of correcting these past injustices and to enhance the rightful position of the First Nations Peoples in Canada's future. L’Assemblée des Premières Nations a pour mission d’inciter ces derniers à réparer ces anciennes injustices et d’améliorer la place légitime des Premières Nations dans l’histoire du Canada. Alors que les membres des Premières Nations au Canada commençaient à s’habituer à l’existence de la Fraternité nationale des Indiens (FNI) et à son rôle de représentante du statut du peuple autochtone, les Chefs ont entamé des discussions concernant une restructuration importante du secrétariat.
