Le terme "appeau" semble réservé au domaine de la chasse aux oiseaux; mais le terminologue, après consultation de M. Robert Dubuc du Service de linguistique de Radio-Canada, est d'avis que l'on peut étendre son sens à la pêche ou aux poissons. Les poissons n'émettent pas de cris comme les oiseaux mais, selon les scientifiques, ils émettent des ondes que l'on peut reproduire à l'aide d'instruments électroniques.
