Some Web browsers allow Plug-in Applications to be attached. Plug-in applications are applications that get invoked by the Web browser when a data stream is received that is neither HTML nor processable by the browser. The header of the data stream identifies what type of data is enclosed. Based on the type of data being received, the browser will invoke the appropriate plug-in application on the client computer.

Certains navigateurs Web acceptent des applications de type extensions (plug-in) qu'ils appellent dès qu'ils reçoivent un flux de données non HTML ou qu'ils ne peuvent traiter. L'enregistrement de l'en-tête du flux de données indique le type de données de la transmission, ce qui permet au navigateur d'appeler l'application d'extension appropriée dans l'ordinateur client.
