Les salissures des tissus sont diverses : «taches grasses» (huile, beurre, [...]); «taches maigres» (vin, café, [...]); «taches métalliques»; «taches chimiques»; «taches en relief» (poussières [...]); «taches en profondeur», etc. Une étoffe peut être tachée à sec ou à l'état mouillé. Pour chaque type de tache, on fait subir au tissu un apprêt adéquat. Par exemple, pour les «taches maigres» on emploi des résines ou des silicones et ces matières limitent la pénétration de la tache dans la fibre. On applique les produits chimiques par foulardage suivi d'un séchage et d'une polymérisation.
