La recherche de substances biologiquement actives est restée longtemps basée sur des approches systématiques, lesquelles ont contribué à enrichir la littérature plutôt qu'à produire de nouveaux médicaments. Comme il est hors de question d'inventorier la production [des] 500 000 petites usines chimiques que sont les plantes connues, sans parler des espèces animales (...) il faut (...) privilégier des familles de plantes dont on sait déjà que certaines contiennent des substances chimiques biologiquement actives (approche chimiotaxonomique). Ou bien soumettre les plantes (...) à quelques tests simples sur des cellules cancéreuses ou à des cultures bactériennes (...) (approche pharmacotaxonomique).
