Le concept d'approche en descente continue [...] consiste à pratiquer une arrivée en descente constante, l’avion évoluant sans effectuer de palier depuis un niveau de vol élevé, supérieur à 3 000 mètres en général, jusqu’à la piste. L’exploitation en descente continue des procédures d’approche aux instruments permet ainsi d’obtenir des gains significatifs en matière de réduction des nuisances sonores, de la consommation de carburant et des émissions de produits polluants.
