The state-oriented approach combines all parameters of all functions of the plant in order to define the plant state and to decide required actions to transfer the plant to a state condition.

Interface homme-machine. Suite à l'accident de Three Mile Island où l'on a vu un opérateur démuni face à une situation qu'il ne comprenait pas, la formation et les outils mis à sa disposition ont été profondément renouvelés, notamment : le rôle de l'opérateur a été reconnu comme fondamental pour la sûreté; - la conduite événementielle a été abandonnée, les combinaisons d'événements étant innombrables, et remplacée par l'approche par état : des paramètres physiques mesurés (températures, pressions, ...) ainsi que de la disponibilité des systèmes. Un système informatique d'aide à la conduite déduit l'état physique de l'installation, à un instant donné (les états physiques sont en nombre limité), et conseille l'opérateur sur les actions à mener; en même temps, il surveille les résultats des actions de l'opérateur.
