Les dépôts argileux qui s'accumulent dans les cuvettes lacustres recevant les eaux de fonte des glaciers, présentent une allure feuilletée due à l'alternance des couches de granulométrie différente. Le fait tient à ce qu'au printemps et pendant l'été, les crues résultant de la fusion des glaciers apportent des sédiments détritiques un peu plus grossiers (limons) tandis qu'en hiver où la fonte est minime ne se déposent guère que des sédiments argileux. De tels dépôts feuilletés ont reçu le nom d'"argiles à varves".
