La langue littéraire s'est fixée lors de l'invention de l'alphabet national par Mesrop Machtots vers 400 après Jésus-Christ. L'inscription lapidaire de Tekor (aujourd'hui Digor en Turquie) date de la fin du Vième siècle. Connue par la traduction de la Bible et par les œuvres des premiers chroniqueurs, l'arménien classique fut dès le début une langue de culture unifiant artificiellement un parler diversifié en plusieurs dialectes.
