Brushing is a shady way to boost the popularity of an online merchant by sending out unsolicited packages containing items of little value. The merchant—or more commonly a "brusher" middleman whom they pay—writes positive reviews using the names of the recipients.

Un vendedor accede a los datos de un potencial cliente y, sin que este pida nada, le envía algún producto. Esa persona lo recibe en su domicilio y lo acepta. Tal aceptación, en los términos de las plataformas de venta, equivale a una compra. Es decir, esa persona, sin haber pedido ni pagado nada, ya es considerada un cliente y, por lo tanto, ya puede dejar sus puntuaciones y comentarios sobre el producto.
