L'arraisonnement d'un navire est son arrêt en mer par un bâtiment de guerre en vue du contrôle de la situation de l'équipage, ou de la visite de la cargaison. [...] En temps de guerre. L'arraisonnement des navires de commerce neutres par les belligérants est légitime et se justifie par la nécessité de vérifier que la cargaison n'est pas contrebande de guerre; normalement il est suivi d'une «visite».

OBS

Ne pas confondre «arrêt» et «arraisonnement». «Arrêt», en droit international public, désigne le simple fait pour un bâtiment de guerre, d'imposer le stationnement à un navire de commerce. L'arraisonnement consiste à arrêter le navire (l'arrêt est donc la première étape de la procédure d'arraisonnement) et à interroger le capitaine. Si des doutes subsistent, après l'interrogation, quant aux activités ou à la cargaison du navire, on procédera à la visite (perquisition) de ce navire.
