Le travail qui va suivre s'appelle le rognage. "On met le fût sur le "basset" (ou "chaise à rogner"), sorte de grand trépied sur lequel il repose comme un canon sur son affût, afin de préparer les deux extrémités à recevoir les deux fonds. On "écaboche" d'abord avec l'"asseau" (ou "assyau", ou "herminette"), petite hache au large taillant recourbé qui fait tomber la caboche des douelles et les appointe (autrement dit : "tailler le chanfrein".

Quand le tonneau est refroidi et ses douves jointes (on l'appelle alors un "canon"), l'artisan "rogne" ses extrémités. Il remplace le cercle de montage par un cercle de "rognage" et incline le tonneau contre le billot. Il utilise un asseau pour tailler le biseau.

OBS

Ne pas confondre avec un autre sens pour "asseau", soit celui de "marteau de couvreur".
