Il ne faut pas confondre les deux : alors qu'un «atrium» désigne un espace habituellement couvert, généralement à l'aide d'un matériau translucide, le patio se définit comme suit : «Espace découvert clos autour duquel sont disposées, et sur lequel s'ouvrent [...] les diverses pièces d'une habitation.» (Source : LAROG,1982, vol.8. p.7887).

Le terme «atrium» vient de l'extension de sens de l'atrium de la maison romaine traditionnelle. Il s'est implanté au Québec. Nous connaissons, par exemple, les atriums de la Place Dupuis, à Montréal.
