External Tank's bipod fittings are covered by foam ramps in the configuration flown on the space Shuttle Columbia.

OBS

The bipod fitting that helps attach the External Tank to the orbiter has been redesigned. The old design ... used a foam ramp to prevent ice from building up on the fitting. Falling foam opened a hole in one of Columbia's wings, leading to the orbiter's breakup on entry. The new design ... uses heaters instead of foam, to prevent ice buildup.

Dans un communiqué [...] la NASA annonçait que le nouveau design des attaches du bipied situées sur le réservoir externe était approuvé. Ce bipied retient le nez de l'orbiteur rattaché au réservoir externe. [...] la mousse isolante a été remplacée par des éléments chauffants qui préviendront l'accumulation de glace sur ces attaches.

OBS

Selon l'ancienne conception, les deux attaches du bipied qui sont les points d'attache des jambes de 135 centimètres (cm) de longueur, étaient recouvertes de pièces de mousse isolante en forme de coin appelées rampes d'attache du bipied. [...] Selon la nouvelle conception, les rampes du bipied ont été éliminées. Les attaches du bipied restent maintenant découvertes et des éléments chauffants ont été installés dessous afin de prévenir l'accumulation de glace.
