A category of officers in a diplomatic establishment.

They are the military, naval, air, commercial, agricultural, labor, science, customs and the like attachés. They assist the Chief of Mission in his duties and are administratively under him; but their main function is to observe, analyze and interpret trends and developments in their respective fields in the host country and submit reports to their own departments in the home government. They may also have diplomatic rank.
