Par tradition, le secrétaire à la Justice est souvent appelé Attorney General. Cette appellation est souvent utilisée en français, bien qu'il ne soit pas erroné de dire secrétaire à la Justice. Notons, cependant, que l'Attorney General exerce essentiellement les fonctions de ministre de la Justice, avec aussi certaines attributions propres à un procureur général.
