Les «avens d'effondrement», dont les vastes ouvertures circulaires sont toujours spectaculaires, ont été depuis longtemps repérés dans tous les pays. Le principe de leur genèse est simple : sur le trajet d'un courant souterrain déjà existant, les voûtes cèdent peu à peu, habituellement banc par banc; finalement la clef de voûte s'affaisse à son tour; la communication est établie entre une large cavité en coupole et l'extérieur. Le fond de l'aven est habituellement occupé par un cône d'éboulis résultant de l'effondrement lui-même, et dont la base est lentement sapée par le cours d'eau souterrain, si celui-ci manifeste encore quelque activité.
