The bowhead or Greenland whale is larger than the right whale and may attain a maximum length of 65 feet. La baleine boréale, (Balaena mysticetus) est caractérisée par une tête relativement grosse (un tiers de la longueur corporelle) et par une bouche énorme munie d'une large lèvre inférieure en forme de coupe. Les dents proprement dites sont absentes de la bouche; à partir de la mâchoire pendent des lamelles cornées, étroites et allongées: les fanons, disposés sur plusieurs files, ils constituent une frange épaisse qui retient et filtre la nourriture.
