Modèles anciens, ces barrages sont formés d'une succession de petites «fermes» ou fermettes. Reliées par une passerelle, chacune d'elles supporte une partie mobile que l'on peut lever ou abaisser pour relever ou pour abattre le barrage. La bouchure peut être constituée d'aiguilles, de planchettes ou de vannettes. Ces nombreux éléments doivent être manipulés les uns après les autres, le relevage et l'abattage sont donc des opérations longues et pénibles, chaque élément devant être manœuvré manuellement.
