Subject field(s)

  • Chemistry
DEF

Native barium sulfate, a mineral having a specific gravity of 4.7 (i.e., about 4.7 times as heavy as water), used to increase the weight of drilling mud.

OBS

As mined, it is conventionally called by original name, barytes.

OBS

cauk: An English miner's term for barite, or heavy spar.

OBS

calk [and its synonym "caulk"]: A variety of baryte.

OBS

barite (baryte): Named from the Greek word meaning heavy, referring to its high specific gravity.

DEF

OBS

BaSO4.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
DEF

Any of several compounds of barium, such as: calcined baryta (barium oxide), caustic baryta (barium hydroxide [octahydrate]), and baryta water, which designates a solution of barium hydroxide.

OBS

According to sources WEBIN and THMIN (1968 p.83), "baryta" refers mostly to the barium monoxide (BaO) compound. The French sources, on the other hand, (such as DCHIM, DOPRO and LAROG) associate the equivalent "baryte" to the barium hydroxide Ba(OH)2 compound.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
OBS
