On connaît le rôle des processus d'altération météorique dans la mobilisation des éléments chimiques. Cette altération conduit à la formation de zones d'oxydation et de cémentation - avec lessivage ou enrichissement en métaux - dans les gîtes minéraux. On sait aussi qu'à une plus grande échelle, la formation de sols libère ou prépare des éléments en vue d'une reconcentration dans les bassins sédimentaires. C'est ce que H. Erhart a mis en évidence avec la notion de bio-rhexistasie.

On y distingue deux types de périodes : période de biostasie et période de rhexistasie.
