Biocuration involves the translation and integration of information relevant to biology into a database or resource that enables integration of the scientific literature as well as large data sets.

Les chercheurs doivent gérer des volumes croissants de données à traiter. Face à ce défi et par manque de formation, la nécessité de créer une nouvelle branche de la biologie s'est peu à peu imposée et la bio-informatique est née. Au sein de celle-ci, une sous-branche est dédiée au recueil, à l'organisation et à l'archivage des données, afin que les [scientifiques de données et les analystes de données] puissent, ensuite, réaliser leurs modélisations et expériences.
