La détoxication peut consister : à neutraliser les déchets acides ou basiques, les uns par les autres ou à l'aide de réactifs; à modifier l'état d'oxydation de certains ions - ainsi le chrome hexavalent est réduit en chrome trivalent et les cyanures oxydés en cyanates, les substances finales étant acceptables pour le milieu extérieur alors que l'état initial est très toxique; à enfermer les ions toxiques dans un réseau siliceux qui les rend insolubles, le produit final étant analogue à un minerai sous forme de terre.

Le terme « détoxification » est plutôt réservé à la médecine.
