BLACK AND TANS [1 record]

Record 1 1995-04-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Units (Obsolete Titles, Armed Forces)
  • Political Science (General)
OBS

A British government military force formed to oppose the Irish organization Sinn Fein (1918-1920).

OBS

In 1920 the British government brought in less scrupulous forces: first the Black and Tans, who were theoretically recruits to the Royal Irish Constabulary, then the 'Auxis', or Auxiliary Division, men with a taste for fighting and brutality, who became an autonomous terror squad. Terror answered terror.

OBS

The Black and Tans were named after the colours of their uniforms.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Unités (anciennes, Forces armées)
  • Sciences politiques (Généralités)
OBS
