A structure of vertebrate embryos formed by cleavage of the fertilized egg, in which the embryo consists of a single layer of cells surrounding a cavity (the blastocoel).

OBS

This term is also used to designate the stage characterized by the structure called "blastula."

OBS

Certains auteurs ne font aucune distinction entre les termes «blastocyste» et «blastula». Toutefois, il s'agit de deux stades différents du développement de l'embryon. En effet, la blastula (un seul feuillet) précède le blastocyste (plusieurs feuillets).
