Lorsqu'ils soignaient un malade, les shamans employaient cet appareil tubulaire pour reprendre son âme et supprimer ainsi la cause du mal. Pour forcer l'âme à demeurer dans le tube jusqu'à ce qu'on la remettre en place une fois le traitement fini, on bouchait les deux extrémités avec des touffes de fibres d'écorce de cèdre.
