Un grand nombre d'équivalents français font déjà objet de propositions, quoique sans confirmation unanime : pénichette, carabarge (qui sont des marques déposées), gîte fluvial (qui a l'inconvénient de désigner la fonction de l'engin plutôt que l'engin lui-même), coche habitable, coche d'eau (apparu en 1987 à un salon de la plaisance). Relevés dans le Nouvel Observateur (mini-péniche et caravane aquatique) ce dernier laisse insinuer que l'on puisse embarquer sa caravane sur des plates-formes plus ou moins stables. La Commission générale de terminologie du Commissariat générale de la langue française se range à l'avis du ministère des transports (France) et préconise le terme «coche de plaisance».
