Les compensateurs de mesure sont basés sur le même principe [que le quartz compensateur] mais les retards ainsi créés sont déterminés. Il est donc possible, grâce à ces appareils de mesurer avec précision la biréfringence d'une section minérale; il suffit pour cela de compenser le retard dû à cette section par un retard égal et de signe contraire, de valeur connue. Il existe de nombreux types de compensateurs, mais tous sont basés sur le même principe et diffèrent très peu dans leur réalisation. [Un exemple est] le compensateur de Berek.
