Entre le palonnier et le manche à balai d'une part, et les gouvernes d'autre part, on trouve un système complexe de câbles et de bielles (timonerie), l'ensemble constituant les commandes de vol. Pour réduire les efforts à exercer, on utilise des dispositifs d'assistance hydrauliques ou électriques (servocommandes); le remplacement de la timonerie mécanique par des câbles électriques et des calculateurs électroniques conduit aux "commandes de vol électriques", qui permettent d'améliorer considérablement le pilotage.
