Le lent éloignement d'Ulysse des régions équatoriales, jusqu'à une distance radiale d'environ 5 AU à l'aphélie, couplée à la très faible activité solaire constatée pendant la majeure partie de l'année 1997, ont fourni une occasion unique de mesurer la variation radiale réelle de la composante anormale du rayonnement cosmique (ACR) décelée dans l'héliosphère interne, à l'abri d'effets latitudinaux.
