Au Canada, la Constitution (et avant elle, l’Acte de l’Amérique du nord britannique de 1867) prévoit la tenue d’un recensement général de la population à chaque dix ans, aux fins de déterminer le nombre de sièges auquel aura droit chaque province à la Chambre des Communes. Il y a donc une contrainte constitutionnelle qui régit la tenue du recensement – on ne pourrait pas l’abolir sans amendement constitutionnel.
