On June 5, 1984, the Inuvialuit Final Agreement was signed by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, the Minister, Aboriginal Rights and Constitutional Development of the Northwest Territories Government, the Yukon Government Leader, and representatives of the Inuvialuit. It was the first comprehensive land claim agreement signed north of the 60th parallel and only the second in Canada at that time. The Agreement clarifies who owns and has rights to the land and resources in the Inuvialuit settlement area.

The basic goals of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) are to: Preserve Inuvialuit cultural identity and values within a changing northern society. Enable Inuvialuit to be equal and meaningful participants in the northern and national economy and society. Protect and preserve the Arctic wildlife, environment and biological productivity.

Le 5 juin 1984, la Convention définitive des Inuvialuit a été signée par le premier ministre et le ministre des Affaires indiennes et du Nord canadien, le ministre des Droits autochtones et du Développement constitutionnel des Territoires du Nord-Ouest, le chef du gouvernement du Yukon et les représentants des Inuvialuit. Il s’agissait de la première entente de règlement d’une revendication territoriale globale signée au nord du 60e parallèle, et ce n’était que la deuxième entente de ce type dans tout le Canada. Elle précise à qui appartiennent les terres et les ressources dans la région visée par le règlement des Inuvialuit et qui a le droit de les exploiter.
