La culture sur brûlis, ou abattis-brûlis, est un mode traditionnel extensif de mise en valeur agricole consistant à abattre et brûler la forêt d'une parcelle pour la mettre en culture puis à l'abandonner pour permettre la reconquête forestière. Le paysage qui en résulte est l’abattis agricole. La forêt, coupée, brûlée, puis replantée en espèces nourricières, fournit la part d'alimentation végétale indispensable aux communautés rurales qui pratiquent l'abattis.
