On distingue deux sortes de fermenteurs à alimentation continue, les cuves gazométriques et les digesteurs à déplacement. Les premiers sont constitués d'une fosse, quelquefois en deux compartiments communicants, fermée par une cloche à gaz en tôle, simplement guidée dans ses déplacements verticaux et posée librement sur le contenu de la fosse ou dans l'eau d'un canal étroit et profond entourant complètement celle-ci (joint hydraulique) (...) A l'intérieur de l'enceinte, les déplacements au sein de la boue se font verticalement. Les rendements en mélange gazeux obtenus avec ce procédé sont de l'ordre de 80 m [cubes]/T fraîche pour les bovins à 250 m [cubes]/T fraîche pour les porcins et 350 m [cubes]/T fraîche pour les volailles.
