The most common type of CVT employs a steel belt and two pulleys. Rather than step among four or five gears of different sizes, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the drive pulley and driven pulley to create a broad range of drive ratios free of the shift feel of conventional transmissions. Imagine riding a bike on which the sprocket and rear gear magically change size without requiring the chain to jump from one gear to another, and you have the basic idea. By increasing or decreasing the space between the pulleys' respective halves, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the conical inner surfaces on which the belt rides. La décision d’un certain nombre de grandes banques étrangères de regrouper les opérations de leurs filiales au Canada dans des centres tels que New York a fortement contribué à cette tendance dans l’évolution des volumes d’opérations. Ces banques étrangères participent toujours, par exemple, au marché interbancaire en dollars canadiens mais, si elles sont établies à New York, une opération avec un établissement déclarant au Canada sera considérée par cette contrepartie (canadienne) comme une opération transfrontière plutôt que comme une opération interbancaire locale. C’est pourquoi les opérations locales avec les établissements déclarants ont diminué alors que les opérations transfrontières ont augmenté. De même, si une institution financière ayant quitté le marché canadien a transféré une partie de ses activités avec sa clientèle, ses opérations seront alors effectuées depuis New York et déclarées dans l’enquête des États-Unis, étant donné que le critère de déclaration pour le volume des opérations est le lieu de l’opération.
