A fine, high-pressure, high-velocity jet of water directed by a small nozzle is used to cut hard or soft materials. Abrasives such as micro-grain diamond may be added to the process to assist in cutting materials such as glass or jade.

La découpe haute pression au jet d'eau. Le centre de découpe au jet d'eau haute pression comprime l'eau jusqu'à une pression de 4 000 bar. Ainsi l'énergie potentielle emmagasinée est transformée et libérée en énergie cinétique. Le fluide est éjecté à travers une buse à une vitesse de 800m/s pour une pression de 3 000 bar. À cette pression, divers matériaux et composites, de différente épaisseur et densité peuvent être aisément découpés et séparés.
