Technically, waste consists of any act which alters the nature of the land, whether for the better or for the worse, "e.g.", the conversion of arable land into a woodland or vice versa. Four types of waste must be considered: ameliorating, permissive, voluntary and equitable. (Megarry & Wade, 4th ed., 1975, pp. 103-4). 1, record 4, English, - waste

Any perceivable change undergone by a food, through any cause, that renders it unwholesome or unacceptable for use. Spoilage is usually the result of enzyme or microbial action resulting, for example, in lipolytic rancidity, putrefaction, fermentation, or mould growth; but food can also spoil by other means, for example overlong storage, non-enzymic browning, or exposure to air or light. In practice the term is most frequently applied to categorising such deteriorative changes (other than food infection or intoxication) when caused by microorganisms. 4, record 5, English, - food%20spoilage

Degradation may change bulk properties such as tensile strength, or may result in the dissolution of small areas of the material.
