DEF

A parliamentarian who has no other function than that of an elected member.

CONT

The vast majority of parliamentarians do not hold ministerial or shadow ministerial office and are known as backbenchers. They are so-called because they sit on the back benches of the Commons ... ministers and their opposition counterparts sit on the front benches.

OBS

This designation usually excludes the ministers of the Crown, parliamentary secretaries, House leaders of the various parties, whips and opposition party leaders and critics as well as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

OBS

Although the terms "private member" and "backbencher" are not perfect synonyms, many authorities use them interchangeably.

OBS

In this context, the capitalization of "member" varies greatly from one source to another, and sometimes within the same source. According to the Parliamentary Publications Text Style Guidelines, "member" should be written with a lower-case "m."

DEF
