[The F404 turbofan engine] has one-third less parts than its J79 predecessor, is half the weight, generates the same thrusts and has the same acceleration/deceleration time. One big plus factor is that it stands extreme inlet distortion without a stagnation stall.

Il est aussi deux fois plus léger, tout en conservant la même poussée et les mêmes temps d'accélération et décélération. Il a par ailleurs pour avantage important de tolérer des distorsions extrêmes du flux d'entrée, sans risque de décrochage dans le compresseur.
