il existe cependant un autre phénomène très important dans la propagation des faisceaux à haute énergie, c'est le phénomène de défocalisation thermique désigné par l'appellation de thermal blooming (épanouissement thermique): le faisceau du laser, en perdant de l'énergie dans l'atmosphère, produit en effet une altération locale de l'équilibre thermodynamique qui se traduit par une modification locale de l'indice. Il en résulte un épanouissement du faisceau.
