A promising step toward monetary improvement was the introduction of the European Monetary System in January 1979. ... A new currency, the European Currency Unit (ECU) was introduced as a reserve asset to help the overstretched dollar and to eliminate the problems of fluctuating member currencies.

Unidad monetaria emitida por el Fondo Europeo de Cooperación Monetaria (FECOM), como contrapartida del depósito por los Estados miembros del 20% de sus reservas de cambio en oro y divisas. Al estar formada en unos porcentajes fijos por las monedas integrantes del SME su valor se calcula en función de los tipos de cambio reales de esas monedas. Sus funciones son: unidad de cuenta para las operaciones del Sistema Monetario Europeo, instrumento de pago entre las autoridades monetarias de la CEE, y activo de reserva. También se la denomina Unidad de Cambio Europea. Las siglas inglesas (ECU) son más utilizadas que las españolas.

El ECU es la moneda común a todos los países que forman la comunidad. Está ya en circulación y la utilizan todas las instituciones comunitarias en sus transacciones financieras.
