Le mot «édifice» est de la catégorie des mots dits «mélioratifs» (et dont la fonction est non pas tellement de désigner des choses, mais plutôt de signaler la valeur de ces choses) [...] «Édifice» emporte avec lui une idée de grandeur, d'importance, qui fait qu'il convient mieux aux bâtiments publics [...] «bâtiment» [...] est générique : toute construction servant d'abri est un bâtiment [...] «maison» désigne un bâtiment servant d'habitation [...] «édifice», «building», «tour», et «immeuble» désignent tous des bâtiments importants. [«building»] est plus rare et ne s'applique qu'aux immenses bâtiments modernes semblables aux gratte-ciel américains [...] comme «édifice», «building» est presque toujours mélioratif, et se prête mal à la désignation proprement dite [...]. À l'extrême opposé du mot «édifice», [bâtisse»] désigne une construction sans aucun mérite [...] «immeuble» [est le terme] qui devrait remplacer «édifice» dans le cas de presque tous les bâtiments à bureaux où ce dernier s'emploie [abusivement au Canada].
