Genetic vectors targeted to a particular cell type do not spread to neighboring cells, yet their synthesized transgene product (e.g., a toxin) may diffuse and also kill the surrounding cells. The term "abscopal effect" ... was first coined by Mole in 1953. The word abscopal was derived from the Latin "ab," meaning position away from and "copos," which means a target for shooting at.
